THE PAST

In the 1950s the first Gaggia espresso coffee machine was installed in the original Papingo, then Glasgow's only coffee bar.

Papingo, the old Scottish word for parrot, was a trendy break-away from the traditional café created by two young West End businessmen in 1957.

A huge success, Papingo sadly ended with purchase of the site for demolition for the Boyd Orr Building for Glasgow University.

The logo, the parrot, drawn by well known artist John Jensen survived - unused until now. The name was adopted by restaurateur Alan Tomkins, for one of his city centre establishments.

THE PRESENT AND

THE FUTURE

But history can repeat itself.  The name is now back with the original owner, linked once more to its original logo for a new enterprise.

Papingo is reborn, to be run as a small gallery by the wife of the original owner, along with Mannequin cake and coffee, run by a young Polish man, both in an interesting venue in Queen Margaret Drive.

It is tiny but Papingo hopes this opportunity will appeal to those who would like some of their art to be seen for sale in a relaxed, social atmosphere.
